Three Favorite Actors, Three Great Shows

It’s been a while…

A long while since I’ve been interested in a drama, much less multiple dramas at the same time. The summer left me feeling underwhelmed with the crop of dramas and even those that I did watch felt tired. Now, that being said it has been raining buckets for days in the Bay Area and there has been little to nothing to do so I said you know what, “I’m going to get caught up on some dramas”.

So, I set out to find some serious eye candy and after giving up on Fated to Love You after the first few episodes Choi Jin Hyuk had me hooked from the first few minutes of his currently airing drama, Pride and Prejudice. This show isn’t the best crime/investigation drama, but it is on par with some of my favorites like I See You and I Can Hear Your Voice. Choi Jin Hyuk makes the show watchable and is supported by a great cast that make him look so much better than his character actually is. His character is a bit boring, but he’s nice too look at…its Choi Freaking Jin Hyuk…whats not to like. Seriously though, the show does have some heart wrenching moments dealing with child abduction and abuse issues that will leave you in tears. Not the most graphic or crime heavy drama, but one that is a nice mix of various styles. Worth a watch.

We all know I love some #ducklips Lee Jong Suk, but after the disaster that was Doctor Stranger I’m still not over feeling betrayed. So when I heard that he would be taking the lead role in Pinocchio I was a bit skeptical as I had though Woo Bin had been offered the role and I would love love…LOVE to see Woo Bin and Park Shin Hye back on screen again together. That combo didn’t happen, but the chemistry between Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye is working out in a strange platonic 12 year old “I like you” kind of way. It’s not believable that this couple will end up together, or even match well, but they’re fun enough on screen to keep my attention. The story also, makes a lot of sense and isn’t convoluted. My only gripe is regarding Lee Jong Suk’s character. Dal Po or Jae Myeong…hell, it doesn’t matter what his name is! It’s the same guy he plays in every drama. He’s an orphaned, well-mannered to a fault, genius with gifts 99% of the world wish they had, but never attain. I hate to say it, but after watching five or more dramas starring Lee Jong Suk he’s becoming quite type cast and I would like to see him take on some roles that add a bit of depth and variety to his character pool. Pinocchio is a great drama though, and one that could make for a great gate way drama for new viewers. It’s got all the great Kdrama tropes…a great cast and a somewhat typical story thats executed quite well.

Speaking of variety and depth…have you peeped Park Hae Jin in Bad Guys? It was this time last year I fell in love with this guy’s charm and demeanor in possibly my Favorite drama of all time, Man From the Stars and he hasn’t been a disappointment yet. I think this is my third fourth drama with him now and He’s shown a different character each time. From charming Chaebol, hot Doctor, and now psycho serial killer…this guy is quickly becoming one of my favorite drama actors with Song Jae Rim. I’m calling it now, in 2015…he’s going to be the hot ticket that Woo Bin and Lee Jong Suk were in 2013 and 2014. Bad Guys is the type of show I love. It’s a crime drama about psychopaths contracted to take down psychopaths in a very DC Comics Suicide Squad style. For each killer they track down they earn a few years off their life sentence. It has the feeling of Gap Dong (but is good) and the quality in writing and action that I cherished in God’s Gift 14 Days.

So there ya have it. Three of my favorite actors in three great new shows. I’m watching Pride and Prejudice and Pinocchio on Viki.com and Bad Guys you can find on the interweb somewhere (I’m not sure if it’s been licensed for streaming in my region)

Fated to Love You – Episode 4

20140715-011953-4793323.jpg

Well, we sure aren’t waisting any time with this show now are we? Episode four is complete and we’ve already had a wedding. Isn’t that something that you usually have to wait till episode 18 or 19 for if it happens at all? I mean, Emergency Couple gave us a wedding in episode 1, but that didn’t exactly turn out too well. One thing that this light speed pacing the show is taking that I can look forward to is some serious shenanigans now that all the tired and true drama tropes are out of the way.

Here’s what I’m hoping happens. Choi Freaking Jin Hyuk’s Daniel falls in love with Mi Young at some point because Jang Hyuk’s Gun goes nuts with paranoia. Jang Hyuk’s acting alone in that should be enough to satisfy any Dramaland fan, but imagine the possibilities. Oh man, the heartache as Daniel discovers he’s fallen in love with his sister. We might get to see The Hyuk cry. -_- whispers: he’s really pretty when he cries…it’s been compared to witnessing a live birth for the first time.. Personally, I hope to never witness such a thing, but I do want to see Daniel lose his control over Mi Young. Dramas just don’t do that kind of thing, bout time!

How cool was Gun when he was running through the hospital to stop Mi Young from having her surgery? That’s the Jang Hyuk I know. Those stunts were awesome and I think I might have woken up my neighbor I was LOL’ing so hard. I think of him as an action guy. Every drama or movie I’ve seen with him has been high octane and full blown testosterone fest so seeing him in a more comedic role is quite refreshing.

Big ups to a whole hour without #DonkeyFace Lawyer Min. Maybe, if were lucky that trash is on his way to another drama as a doctor, or spy…anything will make me happy as long as he’s not on this show again. Speaking of trash, Se Ra is on my No! I Don’t Like List!” I get and applaud that she had to follow her dream, but come on…the whole black swan thing is so over. Plus, she left Gun at the most inappropriate time. Use your words Ahjumma! That makeup though, made my lovely Wang Ji Won look ten years older than she should.

All in all, Fated to Love You is a hilarious and unexpected drama that I can’t wait to watch on Wednesday. Now, I’ve got to get some sleep or else I’m going to be looking like Gun in the final minutes of episode four.

Good night!

Fated to Love You – Episode 3

Second Lead Syndrome

Ok, so we all know I luuuuuuuuuuubs me some #choijinhyuk something fierce, but I was really not prepared in episode 3 to be suffering from SLS… Second Lead Syndrome. But, I’ve got a bad case of SLS brewing folks and I’m not sure how I feel about that.

Firstly, I already fell in love with Gun and Mi Young. By episode 2 I deemed them OTP status. How can I expect to cheat on my OTP when my love for them is just beginning. I just can’t “stand” it!

Secondly, Choi Jin Hyuk didn’t even really have that much to do in this episode. What does it say that I’m already feeling the effects of SLS this early? What am I going to do when I get around to episode four? What about this weeks episodes? Omo…I am not prepared.

Third, is my obsession with Choi Jin Hyuk just that strong that I can’t help but ship him with whichever lead he’s put up with? The answer to that is easily, yesssshhhh!.

SLS aside episode 3 was a heck of a lot of fun. There were so many awkward moments I was literally dying from laughter. The introduction of Gun’s half brother, Mi Young’s revelation to her mother, and Gun meeting #DonkeyFace Lawyer Min take the cake for fun factor and awkward moments. Gun sure knows how to make people uncomfortable…with his words. Let’s use words, ahjumma.

Speaking of Ahjummas. I adore Wang Ji Won and am so happy to see her playing Se Ra in this show, but unless she is Daniel’s sister I feel she needs to go. I’m down for a love triangle, but it can’t deal with a four way love affair between her, Gun, Daniel, and Mi Young. I’m also hoping that Mi Young will end up being Daniel’s love interest and later discover he’s her…nah, no spoilers tonight. BROTHER. I think this show has the guts to pull something like that off. (I’ve avoided all spoilers and haven’t seen any of the precious versions of the show, but come on, he’s got to be the brother of one of the two…right?)

Loving it.

Fated to Love – Episode 1 – First Impressions

Fated to Love – Episode 1 – First Impressions

Within the first twenty minutes of Fated to Love I was reminded of one of my favorite dramas ever, Secret Garden.  I doubt the show will have the emotional pull that Secret Garden managed to illicit (in my opinion it’s the greatest love story ever told.) but, there was something fantastic about the first episode.

The show is full of bright colors and insane situations that had my guts in pain from laughter.  When you watch the show a certain cherry turns up and steals the show.  Aside from the delightful sets the lead female, Mi Young (Jang Na Ra) is outfitted in some really awesome prints that would make Lilly Pullitzer blush.  They did a great job making her look adorable, sweet, and likable.  The glasses she wears, while kind of reminiscent of Harry Potter’s, adds to her innocent face.  She’s super cute and I think many people are going to like this kind hearted character.  I do have to say that I would like to see her character grow a spine and learn to say no to the people who take advantage of her.  Let’s practice…

Ahneeyo…annie…andeyo. 하지, 하지. Mi Young.  Practice that, please.

Aside from Jang Na Ra who stole the show for me the remainder of the cast is killer.  Clara Lee (Emergency Couple), Jang Hyuk (OMG he’s back), Wang Ji Won (I Need Romance 3), and to top things off Choi Freaking Jin Hyuk round out the leading cast.  By the way, that’s Jin Hyuk’s official name from here on out on this blog.  CFJH…FTW!

Jang Hyuk hasn’t been in a drama in quite a while.  Last I saw him he was kicking butt in Iris II and The Flu, but you probably won’t recognize the age defying nearly forty year old actor here.  His hair, wow his hair, is completely different than what I’m used to seeing and may give Lee Min Ho’s Gun Jun Pyo’s perm a run for its money for nonsensical hair style of the century.  It’s kind of amazing.  In other news, I’ve already started growing my hair out so I can jump on this train…sure to be a hot issue.  I’m used to seeing Jang Hyuk in a very macho save the day kind of role, but here he’s caught me completely off guard.  He’s a big scaredy cat, well quoiffed, and way to into himself.  He’s so over the top I couldn’t help laughing at him…in a good way.

Clara Lee and Choi Jin Hyuk each owned just two scenes in the first episode and didn’t share any screen time together, but it was great to see them on screen within the same hour again.  I loved Emergency Couple and hope they get to have a scene or two before this show ends it’s run.  Jin Hyuk, as usual, did not disappoint with his trademarked faces and Clara looked absolutely amazing.  Wait till you peep her outfit in Macau.  Holee meat balls, batman.

Overall, I’ve got to say I’m digging this show.  I’ve got big hopes for this one as it’s been a long time since a dramas really grabbed my attention.  It’s got all the makings for an extremely fun ride.  Will you be watching?

New Drama Alert! – Grandpas Over Flowers

image

TvN is on a role this year bringing us some of the funniest and cutest dramas of the year.  If that weren’t good enough they’ve earned my love forever as their bringing back Choi freaking Jin Hyuk just after finishing Emergency Couple.

Bonus Park Doo Sik is also in the show.  He was baby Gook’s father in Emergency Couple and Lee Jong Suk’s friend in I Hear Your Voice.  For some this might be super cool as Lee Hee Chul from Super Junior is also in the show!

The premise sounds so ridiculously funny I can’t wait for this show!  These sexy police detectives turn into old men and have to find their way back to their younger selves.

Emergency Couple – Episode 19

Emergency Couple – Episode 19

Dear diary,

Ok seriously, I can’t take it my stomach is hurting so bad. Too much laughing, I need to catch my breath. Oh Jin Hee is my hero. To consume all that alcohol just to get her ex husband in bed and make a baby Gook of their own (gook means person in Korean). Not that I blame her, nope…not one bit.

This episode was so boring in so many ways, but Jin Hee saved the day by going after her man. Who says she can’t look that way?!?

Ok, I think I’ve gained my composure.

This episode truly didn’t have much going for it. They saved the goods for the final moments of the show. As far as penultimate episodes go this one wasn’t exactly ultimate which makes me excited for this weeks show! It’s been a long time since I’ve anticipated a shows ending and have looked to the second to last episode to really bring home the bacon.

This has been a roller coaster of a ride and I’m so glad I added it to my drama schedule when it came out. I’ve had to wait days to get access to it since I don’t pay for #dramafever premium and it’s been well worth the wait each and every week.

Emergency Couple – Episode 18

It seems our fate…is not over yet.

Thank god for that because Chang Min and Jin Hee just made my day! I had forgotten about Emergency Couple over the weekend and didn’t realize I had two hours to watch tonight. This was a seriously sweet episode and I certainly did not expect Jin Hee to be so kind and sweet to Chang Min. How cute were her fortune cookies?!? I almost died when he opens them.

I also did not expect this show to make me cry, but her efforts to win him back and start over again were completely moving. Had someone told me that Emergency Couple would make me sob tears of sorrow one week and then cry in happiness the next I would have thought them crazy. This however, is exactly what happened last week and today.

This has turned into a very special show. From complete Romantic Comedy to nothing but Romance…Emergency Couple has evolved into a very emotionally moving show. Nicely done.

Emergency Couple – Episode 17

Emergency Couple – Episode 17

Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things a person must go through in life. It’s right up there with divorce, switching jobs, and moving. I’ve never been divorced, but the loss caused by death is by far more stressful than any of the others. Episode 17 conveys the feelings of grief and sorrow especially well. If you’ve ever experienced the loss of a loved one this show will make you cry, be warned, every feeling you’ve ever felt about it will come blowing up.

There isn’t much else to say about the show. Choi Jin Hyuk was fantastic and the pain he emoted made my throat thick and eyes water. His acting was on a different level, those of you who are waiting for the show to finish airing are in for a special treat. This show has got it all.

Emergency Couple – Episode 15 – Right in the Feels

Emergency Couple – Episode 15

Saturday night’s episode of Emergency Couple came out of nowhere, totally from let field, and hit me straight in the feels. For two months this show has been a light hearted and fun two hours of drama each week…until now. There was nothing fun about this show that pulled on the heart strings like a monster truck rally.

That’s not to say the show wasn’t good. It was, the show was great. I was just not prepared for an overly effective emotional pull. Each scene with the Oh family mothers was intense. I’m glad these two got to say what they’ve been feeling for years. About time! Seeing the cast mope around the hospital was kinda sad, wasn’t it? Yong Gyu stole the show with his problem. I wonder how long he’s known that there’s been an issue and how much longer he can deal with it. How about that pregnancy? Lots of issues in this weeks show.

Then the ending, a cliffhanger of life changing proportions, came out of nowhere and smacked kdrama fans across the face like a #bitchykdramama! The situation that Chang Min faces next week is one of the hardest experiences a person can face and I think it could be the catalyst that brings Chang Min and Jin Hee back together.

One can hope anyway!
